I Want My Bunuel

You know, for a country that goes on and on and on about its precious Kultur, there are large and terrifying gaps in the availability of good movies on DVD in Germany.

Can anyone tell me where I can find a DVD of Bunuel’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (g) to buy or rent in Germany?  In the U.S. it’s been brought out by the Criterion Collection, but I’d rather not have to fly back to the US to get a movie which was directed in France by a bleeding SpaniardAny help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. eBay, why didn’t I think of that?! Thank you, Andreas. I owe you one. The Bunuel (pronounced the British way: BUN-yoo-ell) is already on its way.

  2. “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” is one of Bunuel’s greatest and a candidate for any “100 best films” list.

I took a look at Amazon.de. Nada. Also the local Bonn library. And the Düsseldorf library, just for the hell of it. Nada. I was just as amazed as you are.

“Belle du jour” is available everywhere, though. (Because nobody can forget the scene with the Chinese?).

Filmgalerie451.de is a tip, but the firm charges high prices for rental.

By the way, I was looking for Sautet’s “Un coeur en hiver.” So far no luck, just VHS. I did find Berri’s “Jean Florette” and “Manon des Sources,” indisputably great films, on amazon.de, but nowhere else.

It does seem that the rental DVD situation in Germany has large gaps, particularly where classics are concerned.
